Introducing the xSPINE

The xSPINE is a robust and versatile vest designed to support heavy camera payloads while promoting back health for a long, successful career. Originally designed for steadicam operators to be used as both a front and back-mounted vest, it is now compatible with gimbal systems and handheld systems.

 

Constructed from high-strength carbon fiber and low-weight aluminum, the xSPINE forms a rigid cage that evenly distributes the payload, ensuring optimal balance and ease of movement. 

 

Telescopic horizontal and vertical adjustments across the vest allow it to be tailored to fit most body shapes, and its many padding options offer exceptional comfort.

Mounting Options

The xSPINE is a universal operator’s vest; designed to be compatible with a wide range of mounting options that are quick and easy to interchange.

Adjustments

The xSPINE is the most customizable vest on the market, thanks to its many adjustment points and padding options. 

 

The front and back panels can be extended and contracted to adjust the length of the vest. The shoulder panels and hip panels can adjust the width of the top and bottom sections of the vest. The angled shoulder adjustments can change the width and angle of the shoulders.

 

The xSPINE incorporates dual locked ladder strap adjustments in the front, quickly enabling the operator to adjust settings on the fly with no accidental openings. This allows the operator to make adjustments safely, even while still carrying a heavy payload.

Curved Torso

The xSPINE is designed with both male and female operators in mind with a curved torso to allow for extra chest space and adequate breathing room.

 

The horizontal telescopic shoulder adjustments allow for the shoulder panels to be moved in or out; to be more narrow or wide around the neck. This allows for a custom fit to a range of shoulder, neck, and chest sizes. 

 

The xSPINE also ships with two small and two large slide-on pads that allow an operator to have extra soft padding, and to use a pad as a shoulder cushion for their sled to rest on, in between takes to prevent scratching.

Torso Adjustments

These measured panels can be found all over the vest and are important to observe as the vest must be symmetrical to ensure proper back protection.

 

The xSPINE can adapt to both long and shorter torsos. The length of the xSPINE can be adjusted with a single allen key; there is one screw at the back and one at the front.

 

The extra wide straps keep the vest as rigid as possible while maintaining an easy procedure for opening and closing the vest to make quick adjustments on the fly.

Hip Adjustments

In addition to the hip-laddered strap adjustments, the hip panels have additional expandable panels that can accommodate larger waists and hips. There are ruled measurements along these adjustment panels to ensure both sides are even.

 

The soft slide-on pads included in the kit can be used by smaller operators to pad out the hip section even further for a snug fit. Operators who have sensitive nerves in the front of their hips or operators with larger stomachs find these great to add to the side of the hips to relieve pressure from the center of the hip panel away from their stomach.

xSPINE Padding

The xSPINE is a low-weight (3900g) vest designed to be as comfortable as possible. The pads include a dual-layered air mesh system with air channels, enabling good ventilation while at the same the memory foam makes the vest very comfortable to wear. All padding is machine washable.

 

The primary padding consists of three different kinds of padding; a hard cellular polyethylene foam, a medium resistance cold foam, and a soft memory foam. This combination is designed for optimal support and comfort but can be customized to tailor different body types. 

Traveling with the xSPINE

The front, back and sides can be detached with quick-release pins, to allow the vest to be packed down to be very slim and portable. The vest can easily fit into most suitcases, even some carry-on. 

 

The xSPINE ships in either a soft bag or a hard case.

 

The soft bag that is designed to have room for the vest and the optional xBONE CF.

 

The hard Peli case with custom foam is perfect for rougher travel, or checking in the xSPINE on a flight.

Accessories for the xSPINE

There is an ever-expanding range of accessories for the xSPINE vest.

 

The tool clip can be used to make your allen keys readily available for quick adjustments. The accessory clip can be used to either mount equipment in one or both of the ¼”-20 UNC threads.

 

The baby pin mount can be used to hang the xSPINE on a stand or cart. 

 

The Easyrig Vario 5 or Cinema 2.5/3 or Walter Klassen Mounts allow you to mount your favourite accessories onto the xSPINE.

Spacer Pads

The xSPINE vest is a rigid sturdy parallel frame, designed for optimal stability. For operators with larger shoulders and a smaller waist, or vice versa, the Spacer Pads can be added to balance out the weight distribution and maintain a rigid parallel frame.

 

For very small operators, the xSPINE can feel a bit too large, even with the smallest settings. These cell foam spacer pads offset the distance between the mesh foam padding and the CF plate by 15mm and can be stacked as needed.

 

The vest ships with all three spacer pads: the front (abdomen), the lower back (lumbar spine), and the upper back (trapezius). If needed, the pads can be stacked to provide more padding.

Back Relief Pad

The xSPINE Back Relief Pad is designed to evenly distribute the payload of your steadicam sled or GLINK even more, dispursing the force across the upper, middle, and lower trapezius muscles.

 

To accommodate operators who have especially sensitive nerves at the front of their hips or operators who feel the common steadicam strain on their lower back muscles, the back relief pad can redistribute the weight by adding an extra point of contact, allowing for more adjustments.

 

The Back Relief Pad is particularly popular with back-mounted operators and Trinity operators or operators with very heavy rigs.
